This is a personal project I undertook as a student in Kat Tsai’s Color & Light class. I painted a series of quick, simplified thumbnail color keys based on scenes from Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel 100 Years of Solitude, a seminal piece of 20th Century magic realist literature and my personal favorite novel.
The purpose of this assignment was translating the written word into a visual medium and express the mood, atmosphere and emotion conveyed in a scene through the use of color and lighting. Together, these thumbnails form the beginning of a color script that sets the tone of the setting and story.
I hope to one day expand on this personal project with unique character designs and layout designs based on the characters and settings in the novel.
